In Episode 19, ADI's Judy Agnew, Ph.D., explains the latest pearl, "People Will Assume They're Not Appreciated."
Transcript: One of the most common mistakes that managers make is ignoring good performance. It's all too easy to focus attention on problems and poor performance and neglect to attend to the good things people are doing. This is a problem because as Aubrey says if people are not told they're appreciated they will assume the opposite. If you fail to tell people you appreciate what they do you may find over time they start doing less of it. The same thing applies at home with our family and friends. It's often referred to as taking people for granted and it never ends well. Acknowledging the good things people do at least occasionally will let them know they're appreciated which ensures the desired behavior continues and strengthens relationships.
