In Episode 11, ADI's Brian Molina explains the latest pearl, "People learn better from success than failure."
Transcript:
I'm sure we've all often heard the phrase that we learn from our mistakes. And while that's certainly true failure isn't always necessarily the best teacher. If you experience too much failure it can be tempting to quit before you've had much of a chance to even start to improve, and in the face of those repeated failures folks might actually start to avoid challenges and taking risks and that can really stifle creativity and innovation. And so that's why Aubrey said people learn better from success than failure. Success is reinforcing. When you succeed and you feel good about yourself you're actually more likely to repeat those same and similar behaviors. And this increase in repetitions leads to more improvement even more success, confidence, and then ultimately more learning. That doesn't mean that we should completely insulate ourselves or others from failure. Failure can absolutely result in improvement, especially in the context of those small successes along the way. But instead of embracing trial by fire as the default strategy consider how you can help people experience more success to accelerate learning.
