In Episode 7, ADI's Judy Agnew explains the latest pearl, "You Can't Be Proud of Yourself Until Someone's Been Proud of You."

Transcript: As a leader, have you ever wished your people were more self-motivated? Well it turns out you can help people become more self-motivated. How? The answer is summed up in one of Aubrey's Pearls of Wisdom. "You can't be proud of yourself unless someone else has been proud of you first." The key to helping people become better at self-reinforcement is delivering more positive reinforcement for desired behaviors. Most parents know this instinctively. The more we tell our kids we're proud of how hard they work in school, the more likely they'll be to feel proud of themselves when they work hard. Over time, less parental reinforcement is required, as the self-reinforcement increases. The same is true at work. By letting people know you're impressed with, appreciate or are proud of specific things they've done, the more likely they'll be to begin self-reinforcing—to be proud of themselves. So, taking the time to positively reinforce important business behaviors, strengthens those behaviors and, helps shape self-reinforcement, ultimately creating a more reinforcement-rich work environment.
