In Episode 8, ADI's Bart Sevin explains the latest pearl, "The best job is one where you know at the end of each day how you did."
Transcript: I was talking to my niece recently about her college classes and I asked her which one she liked best, and she told me that she likes the labs best because the labs have problems for her to solve. Well, why would the labs be her favorite? It's not about the subject matter, it's because she gets immediate feedback. She does the work, she develops a solution for each problem and she can see how she did immediately. As Aubrey says, the best job is one where you know at the end of each day how you did. There are many jobs where people don't know how they did at the end of each day. This could be because people only get weekly or monthly performance data or maybe they don't get any feedback at all on their productivity or the quality of their work. This can leave people feeling indifferent, unfulfilled, or frustrated when people do jobs without a lot of timely feedback. You can add that feedback in by telling them how they're doing or helping them track their own progress. Helping people see how they did at the end of the day will lead to improvements in engagement, performance, and overall job satisfaction.
