What is Behavior-Based Safety (BBS)?

One of the biggest challenges in safety is getting people to do what they are supposed to do.

Organizations often have effective training, appropriate procedures and state-of-the-art safety equipment. However, none of that matters if the people in your organization don’t use what they learned in training, don’t consistently follow the procedures and/or use safety equipment. From skipping steps in a confined space entry procedure, to failing to wear PPE at the appropriate time, to not drinking enough water to prevent heat stress, getting people to make consistent safe choices is often a challenge. These challenges can be overcome by implementing a Behavior Based Safety program.

Behavior Based Safety (BBS) is a scientifically-based set of strategies designed to help workers engage in safe behaviors more reliably. It involves observations, real-time feedback and recognition for improvement. When implemented properly, BBS is very effective and has improved safety for thousands of organizations. But a Behavior Based Safety process that focuses too heavily or exclusively on the frontline is not an optimal solution. While such focus appears to make sense since frontline employees are the ones in-the-line-of-fire, frontline engagement is only part of the solution.

ADI works with organizations to understand that in designing and promoting a culture of safety, all levels of their organization will contribute to building a safe work environment in specific and meaningful ways. Identifying and reinforcing the focused actions and clear decision-making organizations need from frontline employees, supervisors, managers, and senior leaders will elevate safety as a business priority. The safe habits will help keep the men and women of the organization out of harm’s way.

ADI understands the commitment needed from an organization to proactively manage safety. Contact ADI today to learn more about our approach to Behavior-Based Safety and our BBS Prime and BBS Quick-Launch implementation options.
